People stand behind the machine

A machine looks like it works alone, and it never does.

The idea

A machine looks like it works alone. It never does. People collected its examples. People decided what it should try to do. People check its answers, or skip checking. A machine is fast and tireless. A person brings judgment and care. Every good use of AI is a team of both.

Why it matters

When you know people are behind the machine, you can ask the right question. Not "what did the AI do?" but "who set it up to do that?"

See it in the studio

When a design tool keeps suggesting the same style, somebody's choices put that style in front of you. The machine only carries the message.

Watch for this

Blaming "the AI" as if nobody made it. Machines do not make themselves.

Try it

Pick one AI tool you use. Find out: who made it? What do they say it is for? Two questions, five minutes.

Prove it

Name three points where people shaped what a machine does before you ever touched it.

How it works

People gather the data, label it, tune the machine by rating its answers, and decide where it gets used. Each of those is a decision, and later ideas on this map look at each one. Some of these people are closer than you think. In Ranchi, Jharkhand, women sit at screens all day drawing boxes around hands, road signs and brain scans so that machines can learn to see them.
