Not everything you see is real

Check the source and look sideways, because your eyes alone are only a hint.

When to use

Before you believe a picture, a video clip or a message — and always before you forward it. Especially when it makes you feel something strongly. That is exactly what a fake is built to do.

The method

Three moves, in order. First, check the source: who posted this, and would they know? Second, look sideways: does any other place — a newspaper, a known website, a person you trust — show the same thing? Third, notice your feelings: if the picture made you angry, scared or thrilled in one second, slow down. Real news rarely needs you to react that fast. Only after the three moves do you decide whether to trust or share.

Watch for this

Trusting your eyes alone. Today some fakes still show tells — odd hands, melted writing, shadows going the wrong way. Tomorrow's fakes may not. Your eyes give you a hint. The source and the sideways look are the real check.

Try it

Take one surprising picture you saw online this week. Do the three moves. Write down who posted it, what else showed the same thing, and what it made you feel. Then decide: real, made, or not sure. "Not sure" is an honest answer.

Prove it

Before sharing any picture, say out loud the three moves and what each one found. Then name the feeling the picture was trying to give you.

How it works

Image and video tools learn from millions of real pictures, so their fakes look like real pictures. That is why the tells keep shrinking: each new model fixes the last one's mistakes. The card is marked EVOLVING for that reason. The eye-tricks change every year. The three moves do not, because they check the world around the picture rather than the picture itself.
