The brief is a versioned record
The chain of briefs and outputs is the evidence that a designer was present.
When to use
Any project where more than one brief gets written — which is every project that goes past the first afternoon.
The method
Number the brief from the first run: v1. Never edit a version in place; copy it, change it, and number it v2. Beside each version, write one line on what changed and why: "v3: added 'no glass balustrade' — v2 kept adding one." Keep the output each version produced next to it, and note the model, its version and the settings that produced it — a brief that behaves differently six months later may be meeting a different model. At the end you hold a chain — brief, output, note, brief, output, note. That chain is a record of the design thinking, and someone who was not there can read it.
Watch for this
Versions that differ only in wording. "v4: rephrased" is not a decision. If you cannot say what design question the change answered, it is a re-roll with a version number on it.
The Lab's note
Versioning the brief is our answer to a question the profession is only starting to ask: when the image was generated, where is the evidence that a designer was present? We think the document trail is one answer, and the one that can be read back. Others put the evidence in the selection, in the sketch over the output, or in the post-edit — and decisions made there never reach the brief, so the trail should say where they were made.
Try it
Maintain a versioned brief across one project for two weeks, annotating every version. Then hand the chain, without the images, to a classmate and ask them to reconstruct the design argument from the briefs alone.

Rebuild the design reasoning for a finished piece from its brief history — and show where a jury could see your authorship in the changes.
How it works
An architect's drawings have always carried revision clouds and issue dates, because the record of change is part of being accountable for the work. The brief is now the first drawing in the chain, and it deserves the same discipline. Professional bodies are starting to survey how AI-assisted work is made and what practices worry about. A versioned brief is a practical answer, and it costs one line per run.
