Clients bring images, not briefs
A client's image is a record of what they want with the physics removed.
The dilemma
The client arrives with a Pinterest board and three AI renders: "something like this." The images are glossy, the client is pleased, and the brief meeting has forty minutes left. Do you take the images as the brief, or take them apart?
The choices
Accept the image as an instruction and start designing toward it. Or read it as evidence of what the client wants, and question it: what does this picture promise that cannot be built on this plot, at this budget, in this climate? The cantilever with nothing under it. The floor-to-ceiling glass facing west in Hubli. The junction no material makes. Then turn each promise into a question that gets you to the real brief: is it the openness you want, or the glass?
The consequence
Take the image as the brief and you take on its promises. The day the engineer draws the column the client "was never shown", the disappointment is yours. Question it and the image becomes the most useful document in the room: a record of what the client wants, with the physics removed, which is exactly where a brief should begin.
The case
A couple bring an AI render of a "Kerala-style" house: a sweeping tiled roof, a double-height courtyard, a glass wall to the garden. The plot is thirty feet wide in a Bengaluru layout with a neighbour hard on each side. The roof cannot sweep, the courtyard eats a bedroom, the glass wall looks into the neighbour's bathroom. The student who asks "what in this picture do you love?" gets three answers — shade, a tree inside the house, light in the evening — and a buildable brief.
Take it to crit
Does the student cross-examine a client's image, or inherit it as an instruction? Ask for the list of un-buildable promises in one reference image, and the questions that recovered the brief.
How it works
An image engine is built to make a building look right, not to make it stand. Spans, junctions and budgets are invisible to it, so its output is fluent exactly where a brief must be exact.
