The model's world is closed

Half of professional judgment is knowing what the tool cannot know.

The idea

Everything in the model's weights is second-hand, limited, and fixed at the moment training stopped. What is frozen is the learned parameters; what the model is given in the moment — your prompt, an upload, a retrieved document — is not. But the weights are where its habits live, and they have never stood on a site, felt a monsoon, or heard a client change their mind. That world is closed. Yours is not. The value you add starts at that boundary, because you are the one in the open world.

Why it matters

Half of professional judgment is knowing what the tool cannot know. The closed world is the permanent list of what it cannot know.

See it in the studio

The model can describe "a narrow plot in a hot climate." It cannot know that your plot's neighbour built to the boundary last month, that the owner's mother must live on the ground floor, that the byelaw changed in March. Most of what is true about any project sits outside the closed world.

Watch for this

Letting fluent general knowledge stand in for absent local knowledge. The model fills your silence with the world's averages, and an average has never built a building.

Try it

List ten facts your current project depends on. Tick the ones a model could possibly have. The ones left unticked are your open-world advantage, written out.

Prove it

Explain the closed world in one sentence, and name three kinds of project truth that live permanently outside it.

How it works

Retrieval, uploads, and live search pass open-world facts into the model's context for one conversation. That is what grounding means on this map, and the idea weights · context · retrieval · memory, beside this one, names the channels. Facts passed in are visitors, not residents. The model weighs them against its fixed habits, and the habits are heavy.
