Deskilling is a design decision
The honest habit offloads the drudgery and keeps the struggle that teaches.
The dilemma
You can let the model draft every section and check them, or draft every section yourself and use the model to check you. The first is faster this semester. The second is slower and you are not sure it matters. Which habit do you build in your first year?
The choices
Offload the whole task and review the output. Offload the drudgery — the repetitive, the already-understood — and keep the struggle that teaches. Or refuse the tool for the task altogether until the skill is yours.
The consequence
The first route produces a student who can judge a section only as well as their last hand-drawn one, and that was a long time ago. The second keeps the skill alive while still saving the hours that do not teach. The third is safest and slowest, and it leaves the student with no practice at the one thing a working office will demand: using the tool and staying sharp. The honest answer is usually the second. It needs you to know which parts of a task teach you something and which only take time. It is not purely your choice: a studio that wants five rendered alternatives by tomorrow has made part of the decision for you, and that is a decision for the people who set the brief.
The case
Two third-year students, same studio. One uses a model to generate every plan iteration and has never resolved a stair by hand. The other generates the tenth option only after drawing nine, and uses the model to find what the nine missed. At the jury both have good plans. Only one can redraw it under questioning.
Prove it
Name one skill your AI use is building and one it is quietly letting fade. Then redesign one workflow so the AI removes drudgery but keeps the struggle that teaches you.
Take it to crit
Can the student say which of their own skills their AI habits are exercising, and which they are outsourcing away? Ask for one of each, named.
