Digital twin means too much

Four capability questions separate a working twin from a static model with a name.

The idea

"Digital twin" has no settled meaning. A study that read more than 15,000 scientific papers found that the capabilities people assume — real-time data, simulation, AI, two-way flow between building and model — are often not yet there in the twins of the built environment. The term is contested: serious people use it both for a live, sensing, simulating model and for a BIM file with a dashboard. Literacy here means asking which capabilities this particular twin has, and which ones it was sold with.

Why it matters

A client who buys "a digital twin" may be paying for a static model with a name. A student who can ask four capability questions protects both the client and the word.

See it in the studio

A facilities manager shows you "the campus digital twin." Ask: does it receive live data from the buildings? Can it simulate — energy, crowds, failure? Does anything it computes flow back to control the building? How often is the geometry updated? Four questions, and the twin usually turns out to be a very good 3D record — useful, but not a twin in the sense promised.

Watch for this

Arguing about the definition instead of the capabilities. The definition is contested and may stay so; the capabilities can be checked this afternoon.

Find one built-environment project that calls itself a digital twin. List the capabilities the name implies. Check each against what the project actually documents. Write the gap down.

Ask three questions that separate a working twin from a label on a static model — and show them applied to one real example.

How it works

The survey used language processing over the full text of the articles to map how the term is used, and found its promised features less mature in buildings than in manufacturing, where the word began. CONTESTED because the disagreement over meaning is real and unresolved; reviewed because the gap it measures is closing in places.
