Friction is a feature

A deliberate speed bump is the place in the workflow where judgment happens.

The dilemma

Every tool you use is being redesigned to remove friction: fewer clicks, faster output, less asking. Your studio is the opposite. A crit is friction by design. Which instinct do you carry into your own workflow: remove every speed bump, or keep some on purpose? And who decides which ones?

The choices

Optimise for smoothness and accept whatever arrives fastest. Or build friction in deliberately: a prompt that challenges the model's suggestion, a forced pause before accepting, a question you must answer in writing before the output goes anywhere. Be honest that each one costs time, and that you are choosing where to spend it.

The consequence

Strip all the friction out and the thinking goes with it. Not because you are lazy, but because the interface never gave judgment a place to happen. Keep friction in and you pay in speed, every time, and you get a workflow where decisions are made by someone rather than waved through. The trade-off is real. The only question is where you put it.

The case

A final-year student builds one speed bump into their workflow. Before any generated image enters the project folder, they write two lines: what this image lets me decide, and what in it I have not checked. Over a term the rule catches a floor plan that could not be walked through, a material that does not exist, and an image they had chosen because their friends liked it. It also costs them perhaps an hour a week. At jury, the question of which was worth more answers itself.

Try it

Add one deliberate friction step to an AI workflow (a written question before acceptance is the cheapest) and record what it caught over two weeks. Then name a place in your process where removing friction quietly removed a judgment.

Take it to crit

Can the student point to the friction in their process that forces a decision, instead of waving the work through? Ask what it costs them, and whether they would keep it if nobody was checking.

How it works

Two recent studies put evidence behind the idea. In one, brief "provocations" (short written challenges offering critiques and alternatives beside an AI suggestion) were found to prompt critical and metacognitive thinking in knowledge work. The effect depended on how urgent the task was, how expert the user was, and whether they felt responsible for the result. In another, prompts asking university students to reflect and consider other viewpoints during AI-assisted search broadened their exploration and improved how they evaluated the answers. Both are small studies in non-design settings, with twenty-four and forty participants, which is why the card is EVOLVING. The direction is clear. The size of the effect, and whether it carries over to studios, are not yet. The studio crit predates all of it, and is the same device.
