Render to reel, and when not to

Start from a locked still, because motion spreads an unresolved problem across more frames.

When to use

When the project needs atmosphere in time — light moving through a room, a figure crossing a threshold, a slow push through a doorway — and the still it starts from is already approved. Not for navigation, not for construction, not for a scheme still changing.

The method

Start from a locked still rather than from text alone; that is the Lab's rule, and the note below says why. Ask the honest question first: does this project need atmosphere in motion, or does it need something else that motion is standing in for — a walkthrough, a section, a decision not yet taken? If it is the second, stop. If it is the first, write in one sentence the design idea the motion serves, before any engine opens. Generate short variants, change one thing at a time, then curate: one motion gesture, usually the slowest. Keep a note of what you chose not to animate, and why.

Watch for this

Motion used to hide a problem. An unresolved elevation looks resolved for six seconds with drifting light. The client approves the feeling, but the drawing has not moved. Motion spreads a problem across more frames; it does not solve it.

The Lab's note

Image-to-video is the Lab's method, not the only one. Text-to-video is a legitimate way to make a clip, and for some work — a mood piece with no fixed geometry — it is the faster one. We start from a locked still because in architectural work the still is where the geometry was decided, and a clip that starts from text decides it again without you. That is a rule about authorship, not a fact about the engines.

Try it

Take one approved still. Make a short motion study and write the design idea the motion serves. Then name one still you chose not to animate, and say why.

Prove it

Show one motion study with its one-sentence purpose, and one deliberate refusal with its reason. If the only thing the clip shows is "it moves", the exercise failed.

How it works

Video engines extend a still into time by predicting plausible motion. The Lab's playbook on AI video — its own material, taught in its workshops — sets the workflow as image-to-video: the still is the score, the motion is the performance. Atmosphere is the dependable use today. Consistent multi-shot sequences are the moving frontier. The card is reviewed because the engines improve every few months and what they can hold steady changes with each release. The discipline does not change.
