India decides to teach AI
The Union government decided to teach AI, and an outlay is still only a plan.
The idea
India has decided, at the level of the Union government, to build and teach AI. In March 2024 the Union Cabinet approved the IndiaAI Mission, outlay ₹10,371.92 crore: public compute, datasets, skills, startups, safe and trusted AI. The target was ten thousand GPUs; by June 2026 the government reported over 38,000 onboarded, with 20,000 more announced (checked against PIB, 22 August 2026). School AI teaching is older than the Mission — CBSE has offered AI as an optional Class 9 subject since 2019–20 — and frameworks such as AI Samarth have followed. This is the institutional context an Indian student stands in.
Why it matters
Policy sets what you will be taught, examined on, and funded to build. Knowing the frame lets you use it, and question it, rather than just be carried along by it.

Your architecture school is being asked the same question the mission asks the country: who teaches this, with what, to whom? In most schools the answer is still forming. That is an opening for a student who arrives already literate.
Watch for this
Reading a mission as a result. An outlay is a plan. GPUs are bought over years. A framework is only a document until a teacher has been trained on it. Track what has been delivered, not what has been announced.

Find the AI content in your own school or college syllabus — a subject, a module, a stated outcome. Write down who set it, when, and what it actually asks you to be able to do. If you find nothing, that is a finding. Write it down too.

How it works
The IndiaAI Mission is implemented by IndiaAI, an independent business division under the Digital India Corporation of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, with seven components: compute capacity, an innovation centre, a datasets platform, application development, FutureSkills, startup financing, and safe and trusted AI. AI Samarth is a literacy curriculum framework for students, parents and teachers, built by Central Square Foundation with the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras and supported by Google.org. UNESCO's 2024 competency framework for students is the international reference point.
