Separate atmosphere from geometry

Image engines hold atmosphere well and geometry poorly, so fix the massing in a modeller.

When to use

Early design, when you are tempted to ask one image for everything — the feeling and the form — and whenever a generated study keeps changing shape between versions.

The method

Two tracks, run separately. The atmosphere track: light, material, season, hour of day, register — explored in a dreaming engine with no geometry held, then curated to a small set. The geometry track: massing, plan logic, section, the position of openings — fixed in a modeller or a drawing, where they can be measured. Only when both are clear do you combine: a grounded generation that holds the geometry from the second track and applies the atmosphere from the first. Write down which decisions belong to which track. A decision on the wrong track is how drift begins.

Watch for this

The beautiful study whose courtyard is a different width in every version. The engine was asked to hold form while exploring mood, and it traded one for the other without telling you. Form has to be directed; you do not stumble into it.

The Lab's note

This is the Lab's director protocol in one move: anchor the geometry, develop the mood, let the picture emerge only when both are clear. Others work image-first and work the form out backwards from the picture. We find that route produces drifting geometry and proposals that do not hold together, so we teach the separation from the first week.

Try it

Run one study on two tracks — a mood set and a massing model — then produce the directed image the two generate together. Write which decisions you took on each track.

Prove it

Show the two tracks and the combined result, and name which decisions belong to atmosphere and which to geometry.

How it works

Image engines hold atmosphere well and geometry poorly, because they were trained on photographs. Ask one for both and it solves the easy half and approximates the hard half. Separating the tracks gives each to the tool that can hold it — the engine for light, the model for measure — and keeps the combining step a decision you make, on the day you are ready to make it.
