The dilemma

The tool is open, it is fast, and the step in front of you is the one where the design actually gets decided — the first plan sketch, the site walk, the conversation with the client's mother about where she will sleep. Use it, because you can? Or keep it out, because of what the step is for?

The choices

Use AI everywhere it works; speed is speed. Or refuse it at chosen steps, for one of two reasons: this step is the point of the work — where your judgment is formed, not applied — or another tool does the job better: a pencil, a tape, a walk. The refusal is a design decision, written down with its reason.

The consequence

Use it everywhere and you may end up with a fluent scheme you cannot explain, because the step that formed it was skipped. A workflow map with no "no" on it was never really examined. Refuse AI on purpose at a few steps and the "yes" steps get stronger, because you know what they are protecting.

The case

A final-year student keeps AI out of the first week of a housing project: site walks, hand sections, conversations. From week two it runs everywhere — research, options, drafts. At the jury the student can say why the plan is what it is. A classmate who generated from day one presents beautifully and cannot answer "why this plan?"

Take it to crit

Ask the student where in this project they refused AI on purpose, and why. Then ask them to distinguish that refusal from a step where they simply never thought about it.

How it works

A workflow is a sequence of decisions about where effort goes. Friction is effort that produces nothing. Judgment is effort that produces the designer. AI removes both alike unless it is told where to stop. The "no" is how you tell it.
