Three prompt families, three registers

One briefing discipline has three registers, because one engine plans, one improvises and one complies.

Our position

Prompting is not one skill. The Lab works in three registers, and briefs the same design intent three ways. To a reasoning model, in layers: intent, context, constraints, criteria, output form, iteration. To a dreaming engine, in atmosphere: light, lens, mood, a charged open phrase. To a grounded generator, in instructions: what to preserve, what to label, what format to return. One discipline of briefing, three registers of language. Give the reasoning model a dreaming brief and you get poetry with no plan. Give the dreaming engine an instruction brief and you get obedience with no life. These are working registers — a way of approaching the machine — not three species of machine.

Why we hold it

The jobs differ in character, not only in interface. One plans, one improvises, one complies. Language that suits one is wasted on the others. A student who learns one register on one tool can brief that tool and is stuck with everything else. A student who writes three registers for one project has a skill that survives when the tools change.

The strongest objection

Reasoning, dreaming and grounded are not three categories of the same kind. Reasoning names a capability; dreaming names a generative mode; grounded names a relationship to supplied information or constraints. One system can be all three at once — reasoning over a grounded image, then generating a speculative one — and a single interface increasingly routes to whatever engine fits. Taught as studio shorthand the split works. Taught as a taxonomy of AI systems it is wrong, and students at this age are old enough to mistake a memorable framework for how the systems are actually classified. "Write one clear brief and let the system route it" may become the honest advice.

What would make us revise it

When a single brief, written once, reliably produces the reasoning, the atmosphere and the grounded plate without the student changing register — judged on studio work — the three families become one brief with three outputs, and this card is rewritten as history. Reviewed each edition against what the tools do.

Try it

Take one project of yours. Write three briefs for it, one per engine, so that each reads as unmistakably different. Hand all three, unlabelled, to a classmate and ask which engine each is for. If they cannot tell, the registers have not separated.

Can the student write three genuinely different briefs for one project and justify each against its engine — rather than the same brief in three costumes?
