The idea

The name "artificial intelligence" was put on paper on 31 August 1955, in a proposal for a summer workshop at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. Four researchers — John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude Shannon — proposed a study on the conjecture that "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." The workshop met in summer 1956, and the field dates itself from it. The dream is far older; 1955 gave it a name, 1956 a group and a programme.

Why it matters

A field seventy years old has had seventy years of promises, failures and recoveries. Knowing that stops the present from feeling like magic, or like the end of the story.

Watch for this

"AI" spoken of as one recent invention. The name was written down in 1955 and the field dates from the 1956 workshop; the methods behind today's tools come from several later decades; the tools on your phone are from the last few years. Three different ages, one word.

How it works

The proposal set out to find how to make machines "use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves." The workshop did not deliver these. It founded a community that spent decades trying, mostly by writing rules and logic by hand — the approach this map calls programmed rather than learned. The learning approach that dominates today also existed in early forms in the 1950s, but it needed data and computing power that did not yet exist.

Lineage

Alan Turing asked "Can machines think?" in print in 1950, six years before the name. The question is older than the field, and the field is older than the tools.
