AI and the profession's future

Judgment, authorship and direction are the value hardest for a machine to multiply.

Our position

The tools are changing what a young architect is paid to do. The tasks that used to be the junior's ladder — rendering, drafting options, first-draft writing, research summaries — are increasingly done faster by machines under a senior's direction. Facing that honestly is part of the literacy. The answer is neither fear nor cheerleading; it is to aim. The value hardest for a machine to multiply is judgment, authorship and direction: deciding what the work is for, standing behind it, and steering the machine's output toward it. Aim there, early, on purpose.

Why we hold it

The ladder is changing shape, not disappearing. Production tasks taught judgment by repetition. If the repetition moves to machines, judgment has to be taught and claimed on purpose. Surveys of practice show the tools arriving before any settled answer: the profession is adopting faster than it is deciding. The RIBA's 2026 survey of UK practices puts use at 74 per cent, up from 59 per cent a year earlier. That is UK evidence about UK offices, and Indian fees, labour and procurement differ; the direction is the part we read across. A student who aims at direction now is not waiting for the profession to tell them where to stand.

The strongest objection

"Aim at judgment" may be advice only a senior can take. Judgment was learned by doing the production work; the years of drafting taught the eye. If machines take the production, the route to judgment may close behind the people who already have it. And the problem is not one student's career. It is the profession's: if the production ladder goes, where does the profession manufacture its next generation of judgment? In the 2026 UK survey, 61 per cent of practices agreed that AI will make it harder for early-career professionals to acquire essential skills and experience. Telling a first-year student to aim at direction skips the very years that made direction possible, and no school has yet shown it can teach those years another way.

What would make us revise it

Evidence from studios and schools that students who skipped production work do not develop judgment — that the ladder cannot be replaced by deliberate teaching. Or evidence that judgment itself is being priced down as fast as production. Or an Indian survey, when one exists, showing a different shape here. List ten tasks a junior did in an architecture office in 2015. Mark which a machine does now, under direction. For each marked task, write what the junior learned by doing it, and where that learning has to come from now.
