From CAD to generative

Generative AI is the newest wave of tools, so adopt it early and critically.

Our position

Design has absorbed wave after wave of tools: hand drafting, CAD, BIM, parametric. Each arrived with panic, was learnt late and in a hurry, and ended up in the toolbox — changing the office around it as it went. Generative AI is the newest wave, not a break in history. The lineage teaches the right stance: do not refuse it and do not surrender to it. Adopt it early and critically, and keep the judgment with the designer.

Why we hold it

Every previous wave rewarded the practitioners who engaged early and critically, and punished both the refusers and the uncritical adopters. History is not a guarantee, but it is the best base rate we have, and it argues for exactly the literacy this map exists to build.

The strongest objection

The wave story may be technological determinism wearing a calm face. CAD, BIM and parametric did not arrive amid panic and then settle quietly under unchanged judgment. They changed who does what in an office, how buildings are procured and documented, how firms are structured, who coordinates, who is credited, which skills became compulsory and which disappeared. Adoption was uneven, and some practices did not survive it. So history gives no warrant for saying generative AI will become one more neutral instrument under the designer's judgment. The comfort of the frame comes precisely from leaving the institutional consequences out — and a comforting frame can leave students unprepared.

What would make us revise it

Evidence that the institutional consequences this time are of a different order: design decisions carried end-to-end — brief to approved scheme — by systems at real firms on real buildings, with the human reduced to acceptance; or fees, liability and authorship reorganised around the tool rather than the architect. If the wave stops behaving like a tool and starts reorganising the profession, we retire the lineage frame, and this map shifts further toward judgment and responsibility. We watch for this every edition.

Interview someone who practised through the CAD transition. Ask what the panic got right and what it got wrong. Note which of their sentences could be reprinted today unchanged.
