A ranking machine picks your references, so it is quietly designing with you.

The idea

AI already shapes the images you see every day. Your feed, your filters, image search, auto-enhance: a machine sorted or changed them before you ever opened a tool on purpose. For a designer this matters. The pictures that shape your taste have been filtered by machines built to hold your attention, not to train your eye.

Why it matters

A designer's references are raw material. If a ranking machine picks your references, it is quietly designing with you, and you never asked it to.

See it in the studio

Search "courtyard house" on two different accounts and compare results. Different feeds show different courtyards, and each one shapes a different taste.

Watch for this

Mistaking "what the feed showed me" for "what exists." The feed ranks by what the platform is optimising for, which is usually attention. Buildings that photograph badly drop out of the feed, and out of your imagination too, unless you go looking for them.

Try it

Pick a building type. Collect ten references from your feed, then ten from a library book or archive. Put the two rows side by side and describe the difference.

Prove it

Explain why an image search result is already a sorted result, not a neutral one, and name who did the sorting.

How it works

Ranking systems learn from billions of taps what holds attention, and serve more of it, mixed with whatever else the platform wants: recency, your contacts, adverts, its own rules. What holds attention tends to be dramatic, new and photogenic. The quiet building loses that contest every day. Nobody planned this bias. It runs at the scale of the whole internet.
